Anthony Famiglietti
This is exciting news as he's one our favorite runners, a NY native, and capable of pushing Geb and Meb. I'd look to see him come out of Times Square with the lead pack. (If there still is one)
Central Park, NYC - Running on the snow covered bridle path is more than possible, it's fantastic. You don't even need those grippy things to attach to your shoe, just the lowered expectation that you can't get in a quality training session. It does take extra leg strength to get around though, so if you run long enough, you may expect some soreness in parts of the leg you don't normally get. Traction is better than the half-paved road too.

Akin to a Navy Seal obstacle course, competitors battle hypothermia, barbed wire, and flames, just to finish. Thanks again to the Brits for coming up with something cool as this would sure to be a hit in the US.
Central Park, NYC - Under pretty rough racing conditions, 17 deg. (without windchill), MHAC's Tracey & Gina raced the NYRR Gridiron 4 miler in Central Park over the weekend, despite both recently getting over being sick. Congrats to both for getting out there and getting in the race. NYAC took the victory in both the men's and women's races with Christopher Pannone running 19:52, and Catherine Robbie running 22:28. The Science of Sport guys just released a new write up this Friday on the continuing debate between the advantages of running barefoot and disadvantages of wearing built-up running shoes, read about it here http://www.sportsscientists.com/
For a more in-depth look into the biomechanics of foot strikes and applications for running barefoot or in minimal footwear, this website is a must read:

Madison Square Garden, NYC - Last night's Wanamaker Mile proved to be an unexciting race where the outcome seemed pre-determined. While the build-up and pre-race highlights of Lagat's previous wins got the juices flowing, the actual race itself lacked any of the tension or unpredictability. His old countrymen, Asbel Kiprop, last years #1 ranked 1500 meter runner, did nothing to challenge Lagat in the last 400 meters and rather seemed to be an armed escort, protecting Lagat from any challengers, namely, NB games winner, Brit, Andrew Baddelly. While Lagat is a worthy champion and rightful bearer of the new moniker 'President of the Boards' the race that brought him the title seemed unworthy. Like the old Kenyan saying goes, "it takes a village to raise a President."
Columbus Circle, NYC - Keeping with the running topic of barefoot running, the Nike Free, which was the first shoe of it's kind to attempt to mimick barefoot running (and is our personal favorite) is now only available at The Running Company at the Time Warner Center. The shoe had been completely sold out from Nike and almost impossible to find. However, this shop, which has a close relationship with Nike, has seemed to be able to get in a shipment of them, with a full size run. If interested, we suggest calling first to see if they have your size. 212- 823-9626 www.therunningcompany.net

Central Park, NYC - With all the talk surrounding barefoot running recently, we were inspired today when one of our athletes showed up to practice wearing the Vibram 5 Fingers (shown above). Basically a light weight rubber sole, affixed to the foot with some light fabric and a strap, this is the closest to barefoot running you can get without actually having to go barefoot. He's had no problems so far adjusting to the transition, and I'm sure he's feet and legs are stronger for it, ultimately making him a faster runner. I'll give a full product review soon, now that I'm getting a pair!
